Ice Hockey is classified as an "Equivalency Sports" What this means is, for example in men’s hockey, a coach can divide the scholarships allocated between a larger number of hockey players. Say 24 partial instead of 18 full ride scholarships. Of course the percentage of scholarship coincides with the coaches assessment of a players contribution to the team so there are possibilities of a “Full Ride” for those players the coach feels will make a great impact.
There are 60 Division I and 6 Division II colleges that offer ice hockey scholarships for men. For women there are 36 colleges. The NCAA allows each Division 1 and Division II ice hockey program 18 scholarships for men and 18 for women.
That’s a total of 1,188 scholarships for men and 648 women's scholarships in the NCAA. Remember, these scholarships can be divided among many players therefore allowing more opportunities.
