Swimming and Diving are classified as an "Equivalency Sport" which means that coaches can "share" their allocation of scholarships between many players. For example in Women’s Division I swimming and diving, a coach can divide the scholarships allocated between a larger number of athletes like allocating 20 partial scholarships instead of 14 full ride scholarships. Of course the percentage of scholarship coincides with the coaches assessment of the athletes contribution to the team, so there are possibilities of a “Full Ride” for those athletes that the coach feels will make a great impact.
There are 142 Division I and 50 Division II colleges that offer swimming scholarships to Men. There are 185 Division I and 64 Division II colleges that offer scholarships to women. The NCAA allows each division 1 swimming program 9.9 scholarships for men and 14 for women. In division 2 the ratio is 8.1 scholarships for men and 8.1 for women.
That's a total of 1,810.8 swimming and diving scholarships for men in the NCAA alone. For women the total number in the NCAA is 3,108.4. Remember, these scholarships can be divided among many players therefore allowing more opportunities.
