Track and Field is classified as an "Equivalency Sport" which means that coaches can "share" their allocation of scholarships between many athletes.
There are 271 Division I and 148 Division II colleges that offer track and field scholarships for men. For Women’s outdoor track there are 293 Division I and 172 Division II outdoor track programs. The NCAA allows each Division I college track program 12.69 scholarships for men and 18 for women. In Division II the ratio is 12.6 for men and 12.6 for women

There are 252 Division I and 101 Division II colleges that offer Indoor track and field scholarships for men. For women there are 290 Division I and 108 Division II colleges that offer Indoor track and field scholarships. The NCAA allows each Division I college track program 12.69 scholarships for men and 18 for women. In Division II the ratio is 12.6 for men and 12.6 for women
A total of 3197.88 for Division I Men’s and 1272.6 for Division II scholarships are available in the NCAA. For Women’s Division I there are 5220 and 1360.8 in Division II.
