Water Polo is classified as an "Equivalency Sport". What this means is, for example in women’s water polo, a coach can divide the scholarships allocated between a larger number of water polo players. Say 12 partial instead of 8 full ride scholarships. Of course the percentage of scholarship coincides with the coaches assessment of a players contribution to the team so there are possibilities of a “Full Ride” for those players the coach feels will make a great impact.
There are 27 colleges which offer scholarships for men’s water polo and 41that offer women’s programs. The NCAA allows each Division I and Division II water polo program 4.5 scholarships for men and 8 for women.
That’s a total of 99 scholarships for men’s water polo and 328 for women’s in the NCAA. Remember, these scholarships can be divided among many players therefore allowing more opportunities.
